Prof. B. N. Das (Link), one of the pillar on which Dept. of Electronics & ECE, IIT Kharagpur stands tall today, has left his mortal frame on 7th Aug., 2015, early morning. In yesterday's condolence meeting, Director, IIT Kharagpur was telling that it is not just this Dept., he was one of those persons for whom the institute is known for excellence today, and all of us should emulate his path. Prof. Das' love of integrals, maths., analytical approach on one side and determination, grit, passion for quality on the other side, were in the making of him and his awe-inspiring personality. His students are spread far and wide and doing their organizations proud for the important roles they play there. Prof. Das adorned simplicity till the end of his life. We are told that he avoided being administrative Heads not to miss his time with research.
He was my B.Tech. project guide. Had the opportunity to interact with him during my research scholar days here and later as a faculty. Many memories.
We miss Prof. B. N. Das and Prof. G. S. Sanyal (Link) of that era who led from the front R & D activities in microwave and antenna engineering.

Prof B N Das was with SAMEER ( Society for Applied Microwave electronics engineering & research) at Chennai for well over a year as UNDP expert and taught us numerical EM computational techniques. During that period all of us at SAMEER who have passion for learning interacted with him closely and it was like Gurukulam way of learning as he stayed with his wife at our guest house within SAMEER. I really learnt more about Electromagnetic and radiation systems. He was keen in teaching and as well ensuring every one of us understood his presentations. He never used power point presentation and could easily derive complex double & triple integrations of EM equations on board, which made all of us also to work along with him and understand better. He was one of the genius teachers in India and i would rate him the top of Electromagnetics engineering ( and next is Prof M S Narasimhan who was at IIT, Madras and taught me GTD and MOM methods of numerical analysis of antenna performance) when i was a student at IIT, Madras. Prof Das had published close to 100 peer technical papers in IEEE, IEE and other global top technical magazines. My highest regards to Prof B N Das. - S Karunakaran, Former Director, SAMEER
